Today's mid review key points.

From Vision education, Corbett had some very interesting insights on my project that really began to hit the improvement needed/missing areas.

I just jotted fragments of statements I felt they were more powerful while open to interpretation.

1 "mini goals" great concept, during the cutting/construction process of a template create motivations to continue. It is no fun to keep cutting parts out it becomes extremely monotonous and dull. But if though graphic/text elements you are lead to cut a few bits out then glue parts together to make a solid form, this creates a tangible form of accomplishment and motivation to continue.

2"add on(s)" Several different models that interact. Moving lego(s)if you will. (this one while similar to a prior of concept of mine I'm taking with a grain of salt it has many different possible meanings)

3"interest to start playing" why will somebody pick this up or download it? How does it's graphic representation convey what this is about, what is used to spark interest. What tells the viewer that this is a pattern to to build a moving tangible object from a flat sheet of paper?

4"more recognizable objects" This is very true, almost every body has responded to the oil pump concept with interest and delight. While the more abstract gears and crank are ambiguous to its function as an object in the world. In short creating mechanical parts for mechanical parts sake is not interesting beyond its self. Interesting machines are ones that have historical, cultural, social and emotional connections and will draw people in.

Now with these broad new considerations there is much to be experimented with, this is where I would like to open this up to as many people as possible. If there are any graphic designers, engineers, teachers who are interested or have suggestions, comments, feedback or anybody willing to construct a pattern please Do not hesitate to contact me or post a message.

Since the last model i had 2 new major improvements. First using Blocks in solidworks. This really helps my ability to engineer parts and know if they are going to work as a solid form. Secondly i decided to shove some bristle board into my printer and see what happens. The printing worked with out a hitch so no messy transfers of patterns. Next i need to look more at clear ways to help instruct the use of these patterns and construction safety.

so i created another model in solidworks that i hoped would work. Then created the flat patters in pepakura (see earlier posts for more details on this) Then i began to cut down 18x24 bristle board to 8x11 sheets.

so crossing my fingers it went though my printer w/ out any trouble or jamming.

with the patterns in hand i started cutting them out. However printing on 8x11 with out tiling is defiantly a challenging design constraint. Now parts have a serious size restriction making sure that the parts do not become too small or complex to handle is becoming a serious concern.

Lots of small connections and parts that need to be simplified a bit in how the patterns are made

Also i have been watching the amount of waste from the patterns to minimize scraps if recycled card board cant be used for intricate parts.

After about 7 hours of cutting and gluing its finally complete.

So now i've been playing a bit more with cardboard to see what else this material could be used for to make and teach. The areas of interest i have been experimenting/looking into are gears, cranks, flight, pulleys.

The first round, testing the feasibility of cardboard gears. To construct this i designed a set of gears in solidworks, then with some time at the computer and figuring some software issues out, converted the solidwork files into dfx files using Polytrans. Then i could import the 3d data into Pepakura very cool program which creates flat patterns for paper craft from 3d models. This process is a little sticky but if anyone has quest ill explain more in depth.

so the way the patterns were created the size of the tabs to attach the gears together don't work with cardboard. There is just not enough material to keep the layers from ripping. however this just may be a scale issue but the next round of tests will be to look at alternative methods for construction.

so i moved to bristol board to finish the gears, cut much faster and a bit easier to handle.

so its been a long time since the last update and much has improved and changed. Since the winter break i have been working with high school students helping them prepare for the first robotics competition. After a few weeks of teaching and working with children at the High school of Computer and Technology ideas of how to implement an open source thesis began to emerge.

After seeing the interest in robotics paired with conditions and limitations of this school i began to think up basic do it your self engineering kits for kids. A way to learn basic concepts with out being limited to expensive parts. As the weeks went by i noticed how much cardboard the school threw away and integrated that into the development of this project. Essentially i want to make make kits with several guide lines.
1. Be totally free and accessible to any one with internet access and a 8x11 printer. ( see all the open source stuff below)
2. Be able to be constructed buy the user cheaply with glue a knife and found materials.
3. inform the students with information printed on the template to place it in context and historical/present application. (have a lesson plan for the parts)
3. Create a new outlet for cognitive learners that challenges traditional teaching methods with a hands on approach. (also researching tactics for teaching mildly learning disabled children to widen use)

Look further now concepts of open source and design in the manifest physical world some interesting sights came up. Ronen kadushin and his open design is an interesting working model of concepts I have been thinking about. Its a refreshing look at how he is using the digital world to freely distribute designs that can be downloaded, and made for non commercial use under the Commons Deed

I find this quite interesting in notions of offering forms as ideas to play with, they can be edited revised customized made, passed on and have derivative works created. Ilso i think this model proposes a potential system which can be learned from. The potential to offer products that are commercially made but origins are open source for anybody to use while the creator holds the rights for its commercial sale I'm not to sure if this is a bastardization of that system yet or a viable way to foster innovation sharing and ensuring profit.

So beginning to look more and more into how the concepts of piracy, property rights, transfer into the physical world, this absurd article came up. LINK to article What are the implications that span far beyond the digital world into the physical when everything is owned, patented, trade marked and sold back to you? Including human DNA, food, and nature. This begs the questions what cant be done? And what should be done to protect the world from being owned at every level by one corporation at a time.

Ok so these two boards are the vast rethinking of the scope of what id like to accomplish in this project. Who pirates software? Why? What are the economic/social influences and how does that really affect developed nations developing the software. Then after critically looking at this I tried thinking of creative solutions that could break into new markets that are do not have the spending power to afford such high costs. In the end a AD supported version of software could possibly be a viable solution to deliver free software to consumers while still creating revenue to producers.

Sharing is caring.... Isn't it?

By now I'm sure most of you have heard of the pirate bay the Swedish based Bit torrent website. Basically its a simple little website which has a repository of links leading to small networks to download whatever files its users have decided to share. Its reached the spotlight of the media, and mainly the large industries fighting for protection of copyrighted works being distributed. So whats the big deal? Since the days of the tape cassette and VCR this has all ways been the clash with new technologies and the ability to copy creative works. But what differs hear is the interesting out come from the media attention to the pirate bay and its organizers the Piratbyrån.

Looking at this closer its about much more than getting the latest digital media from the Internet...or is it? All this media attention has gained huge support for the Pirate Party in Sweden, and all over the world. This is not an attack, its a revolution, not for Internet piracy per say but rather deep rethinking of intellectual property and creative works of any kind and the freedom that is the Internet.
